A sunlit trail for fans of cult crime drama The Mallorca Files

The Spanish island of Mallorca is cashing in on the global popularity of a BBC daytime crime series by creating a tourist trail of locations featured in the show.

The Mallorca Files follows a mismatched pair of police officers — an uptight British detective, played by Elen Rhys, and her happy-go-lucky German partner, played by the Austrian actor Julian Looman — as they investigate murders, kidnappings and drug smuggling on the sun-drenched Balearic island.

The first series proved so popular in its early afternoon BBC One slot that it was repeated in prime time. It has since been snapped up by broadcasters across Europe and even as far as Japan.

To coincide with the imminent release of the second series, the authorities in Mallorca have produced a glossy English-language map allowing visitors to tour some of the beauty spots that feature as backdrops. They include the cloister of the Montesión Jesuit school, the scene of a theft of valuable religious icon, the Cabo Blanco cliffs, where the first episode came to a dramatic climax, and the bar in the capital of Palma where the detectives go to drown their sorrows at the end of a shift.
